I'm in Zone 9 and use hay to protect my sweeties....some of which are suppose 
to survive freezing temps.  Since we do not have or keep cold temps long 
enough I am always raking the hay on and off of my beds....I've even been 
able to keep a Muessandra in the ground for four years now protecting it with 
hay......it has even survived "harsh" zone 9 winters using the hay.

BTW - we mow the hay into the grass with a mulch mower in the spring.
