Have you tried compost instead of soil? I put a mound of compost over my
rose's crowns for winter protection. Works like a charm and is very handy in
the spring. Compost for spring mulching/amending is right at hand. I just
take down the mound and spread it out to a 2- to 3-inch layer on the ground
around the rose. --Janis
