Hello from the north
Paul you have quite a few choices in the way of deciduos shrubs for shade
- Summersweet (Clethra alnifolia)
- Smooth Hydrangia (Hydrangia arborescens) The cultivar'Annabelle' flowers well
for me despite being planted under very heavy shade.
- Wayfaring Tree (Viburnum lantana) I find this large shrub to be more tolerant
of heavy shade than the rest of it's Viburnum brethren
- Snowbery, Coralberry (Symphocarpus sp. not sure of spelling)
Althogh not a shrub False Spirea (Aruncus) can be used in much the same way as
the above plants.
Hope this helps
Mark
PS sorry to engage in plant bashing but i find both the snowberry and annabelle
hydrangea tend to look ragged as the season progresses so i tend to use them
more as a background plant.
