Companion planting for tulips

Isn't this the eternal question -- how to hide that bulb foliage
for six or eight weeks? I love to use iberis as edgings for bulb
plantings -- the white flowers really showcase the blooming bulbs
in Spring and the evergreen foliage looks good all year. Some of the
more successful companion plants I use include:

Daylilies: Get ones with good foliage, interplant either a variety or
all one kind, such as Stella d'Oro or Happy Returns.

Hostas: Several are sun tolerant, large enough to mask the foliage but
not so massive as to be obtrusive (e.g., Golden Tiara) - or mix
daylilies & hostas among the tulips.

Smaller grasses, such as mini penesetums, prairie dropseed, Imperata.
A few purple-leaved sedums would mingle in nicely.

I like the nepeta suggestion, too, which I use with bearded iris.
As for the 'a' word, I use a lot of the tall blue salvia 'Blue Bedder'
or 'Victoria Blue' as fillers. These look terrific with edgings of
Coreopsis Moonbeam and maybe some clumps of grey foliage, such as
shorter artemesias. Another 'a' edger that is beautiful everywhere is
the
small blue lobelia - some are still in bloom here now under a climbing
rose.

Have fun.
