I watched an episode of Rebecca's Garden awhile back in which she was
touring some tulip farms in Holland. Part of the process was cutting off
all the blossoms, I think to put all of the plants' energy into the foliage
to feed the bulbs. Sure was sad, watching all those flowers get chopped off
in their prime!
