Subject: Re: FW: [Hardy_Plant] Split Corona narcissus reversion

Has anyone out there in plantland ever had a split corona narcissus that
reverted to a regular trumpet shape after a few years?  I've grown Cassatas
in my garden for several years and last year I noticed some "mystery"
narcissi popping up and I've come to believe that they may be the Cassatas
reverting back to their true origins.  Any ideas?

I have seen this happen with 'Baccarat'--a few stems in a clump may revert to a trumpet or short cup daffodil, but it has never been permanent. 'Baccarat' is I believe a sport of a regular-cupped daffodil anyway, so the reversion is not surprising.  I also have not seen this reversion in my planting in several years.

If 'Cassata' is reverting (it never has for me) it may be an aberration for a particular year.  If it appears to be permanent, perhaps there were small, non-blooming-size bulbs in the planting that weren't truly 'Cassata' and they have finally reached blooming sized.  Another possibility is that 'Cassata' has set open-pollinated seed and the seed has fallen to the ground and grown into a new plant, which is not 'Cassata' but a new hybrid of 'Cassata' open-pollinated.  However, it takes from 5-8 years for a daffodil seed to reach blooming size, so this may not be the case in the planting discussed.

I can only advise watching the situation to see whether the stems in question revert back to split-coronas. You could also mark these stems for roguing out after bloom if you wish.
