My SO chafes at my compost piles and I've tried all methods.  Last 
year, I inherited several bales of straw which I used to encircle a 
large and unruly pile of compost (cold method) and I like it very 
much.  As the straw breaks down, it is perfect for garden mulch and I 
simply replace it with another bale.  Bales are extremely inexpensive 
and last a long long time.  Just be sure to ask for straw without 
seeds.  I had that experience once many moons ago and vowed never to 
take the chance again.
