coleus cuttings

A knowledgeable neighbor told me that coleus do WAY better when you take the
cuttings in late summer, rather than just before frost. Last year, my
pre-frost cuttings rotted. He said they quit growing somewhere along the
way and it doesn't matter what you do, they're not going to make it from a
cutting.
So now I just dig up one or two.
I keep them in the basement under fluorescents, and hack them back to stubs
in the spring when I set them out. Did fine this year.
