Becky, I have made troughs and I have given classes on making troughs. You
will find many different recipes. Just do a search on Hypertufa and you will
be surprised. I have used a mixture of Peat, Portland Cement & sand and also
replaced the sand with perlite which gives a lighter colored product and also
will be less in weight. You can do lots of other things with the mixture
also.
I am a member of the Dwarf Conifer Soc and this is a wonderful way to
display your plants. It is also fun to make a picturesque garden with the
addition of other plants, rocks, etc. Example in one of my troughs I
planted a dwarf arborvitae (I rooted from a mature planting), Mexican
Heather, Lysimachia nummularia 'Aurea' draped over the front corner, 2
rocks, a piece of petrified wood with a ornamental fairy sitting on the wood.
I also covered the top of the soil with pea gravel.
