RE: Salvia for shade?

Gene,
I agree with Vivien that Salvia koyame is good for shade. Mine is growing
in quite dense woodland shade, started blooming in late September and is
still going full tilt. Another you might want to investigate is Salvia
nipponica 'Fuji Snow'. It has a green and white variegated leaf and a pale
yellow flower. I would say it is mostly a foliage plant. Dappled shade or
morning sun is perfect, otherwise it will sunburn. It really lights up a
shady spot. Hardy to zone 4 I believe.
What is the difference between a sage and a salvia? Just a matter of taste
:).

Subject:	Salvia for shade?

Hello Claire and any who want to jump in here....
I have been meaning to do my homework for some time now on Salvia. My
wife grows several of them as annuals in her raised beds and they are nice,
indeed. By the way... what is the difference between a sage and a salvia?
I have a shade garden here in zone 6. Are there any good looking salvia
that actually perform well in shade? Not somewhat tolerate of shade, but
actually prefer shade, rather than being forced into the environment.
    How about some real experience?
    Gene E. Bush
