Yes, Barb. I am aware that it can be thuggish, but nowhere near as bad as
some I've had to deal with. This particular plant was growing in the yard
of a mother of a friend of mine. The main patch was about 2 ft. around with
a short trellis See link below:

There were probably a half dozen or so pieces sprouting several feet from
the main plant. The soil is heavy clay and the yard in light shade, so I
think that this is one of those plants that can be a pest if it gets too
"happy", but if planted in more restrained conditions, can be restricted
and even enjoyed. I grow a Coccinea grandis, a neat little caudexed plant
(also a cucurbit). On Hawaii, and other Pacific islands, I guess it is a
real pest, but mine sits in its little 4 inch pot and barely puts out more
than 6-8 inches of vine a year - never even bloomed. I'm probably torturing
the poor thing!!!
That's why we can grow and enjoy water hyacinth up here in Wisconsin (and
pay several dollars a clump to boot!).
