Coffee grounds

Forgive me if this sounds stupid, but has anyone heard of scattering coffee
grounds in your outside (or inside) gardens?  I have a new perennial garden
and have tried putting the coffee grounds in it over the summer.  Have really
not seen much change yet.
Before I retired, one of the managers used to pour his left over coffee (from
the cup) into his large plant in his office.  The plant did great!
