Peonies in Containers?

I can't bear to pass up free plants, and despite the fact that less than a
month ago I created a new 20x6 foot bed, I've already run out of space.  I'm
really trying to restrain (and retrain!) myself but...

I've just been given a clump of peonies and I really don't have a home for
them.  My question is: can I grow peonies in containers?  If so, how should I
winter them?  I'm in Ottawa, Canada (Zone 4/5).  I know peonies don't like
having their roots disturbed so I'm not sure about this idea.
