Re: Ilima?

Ilima (Sida fallax). Nan, I have never grown it, but found this info in
"Plants in Hawaiian Culture" Beatrice H. Krauss, U of Hawaii Press.

" 'Ilima, a member of the mallow family, is native to Hawai'i. It grows
from near sea level to more than 6,000 ft. It takes various forms, from
shrubs ten feet tall to almost prostrate. The leaves vary from almost
oblong to heart-shaped with tips pointed or blune. The flowers range from
yellowish to orange, sometimes reddishbrown at their bases. They are about
5 in long and are five-parted. The generally grow solitary or in twos of
threes together, or multiflowered, on stalks near the tips of branches. The
calyx is ten-ribbed and downy; it is about half as large as the corolla.
The fruit is a wide, seven- to twelve-spoked, wheel-like one-seeded, beaked
seed case or carpel. All partrs of the plant except the corolla areusually
covered with a white down. Some mountain forms are glabrous."

It is indeed mentioned elsewhere in the book as being used for leis.

How do you grow it? Not a clue. Sorry. HIII doesn't mention it.
