Hello all,
Abelmoschus or Flowering okra is hibiscus-like and is easy to grow.
Abelmoschus manihot reaches 6-8 feet and bears huge, light yellow flowers
in mid-summer. These can reach 6-8 inches across and they have a deep
purple center. Each flower lasts only one day, but the bloom period lasts
for weeks. It is a perennial in Asia where it is native. It will survive
winters in zones 9 and 10. It will self sow as far north as zone 7.
There is also a red flowering okra, Abelmoschus moschatus. It requires hot
summer temps and usually grows 1 1/2 ft. to 2 ft. tall. Flowers are
usually all red, but some may be pink or whitish.
Both species are best started from seed sown indoors about eight weeks
before setting out. Full sun, constant moisture, and well-drained average
soil will give good results.
Hope this helps.
