The American Daffodil Society has an annual (usually) award, called the
Wister Award, that is given to a daffodil cultivar of great garden merit. It
needs to be hardy, readily available, with the flower standing above the
foliage. Some past winners are: Stratosphere 7Y-O, Accent 2W-P, Ice Follies
2W-W, Sweetness 7Y-Y,
Ceylon 2Y-O, Salome 2W-PPY, Peeping Tom 6Y-Y, and Rapture 6Y-Y.
These give you a variety of colors in very dependable flowers.
You might also like to note that it is believed that King Alfred no longer
exists. A lot of companies sell a bulb called King Alfred, but it would be
more correct to call it a King Alfred type.
