S&R,
If the apples are rotting, there's no use trying to save them. Pick them
up and compost them. No use leaving the rotten apples under the tree,
providing a home for apple-loving pests to multiply and cause trouble next
season.
About February or so, spray the (leafless) apple tree with some dormant
oil spray. This organic spray will kill several over-wintering pests.
I don't know if anything is recommended to spray on the fallen apples
themselves. Good sanitation practices make more sense, IMHO.
Call your local extension service and find out what they recommend for
your specific area.
What kinds of apples do you have?
Good luck,
Kathy in Missouri
