I DO have long nails - and they grow very fast (I think it's the compost)
- but I don't polish them.  I don't wear gloves, and often have dirt
under each nail.  It doesn't bother ME, but it drives my DH nuts. 
Washing dishes is the best for getting them clean, but it agrravates my
excema, so I have to wear gloves in the water.

I recently spoke to a doctor friend about nail fungus (not my own, just
chatting with a friend) and he theorized that the most likely transmittal
was earth to fingernails/toenails . . . .gardening.  I think I'll start
wearing gloves in the garden after I heard that.
