I have heavy clay soil, which I amend but still, it is far from sandy.
I lost the only gaura I tried. Can I make a sandy area for it in my
clay, or will that just cause pooling and drown the poor thing? Anyone
have any suggestions?

Hi Graham,
I would suspect that lack of hardiness in zone8 is probably due to
overly
wet winter conditions. I grow mine in very sandy, rocky, poor soil and
have
never lost one at temps as low as -15C with absolutely no shelter or
snow
cover. Its not 5ft high, but rather 2 1/2 to 3 but flowers profusely
from
mid June to mid Oct.
I cannot see any real differences between cv.s except for Siskiyou Pink
and
the variegated ones, but the names sound good.
