Re: Gaura

So many members have asked about hardiness of Gaura.

I have been growing this plant (all seed grown) for over 10 years in
Zone 4 (little or no snowcover) AND in hard packed, often waterlogged
and flooded grey clay....In fact, contrary to what is often stated in
the references, the many times I have tried it in the classic "well
drained...etc.) it has succumbed, but my patch in the clay remains.

I must admit, this is a row of perhaps 25 plants, in the seed
production area of my garden. I DO lose some occasionally, and
perhaps do not miss them as much as you might if you only had one. BUT
any lost are ALWAYS replaced by self sown plants, so I have never
really been without the fluctuating 20-25 plants....

This is such a dynamite plant that it is, in any event, worth growing
as an annual no matter what your zone & crossing your fingers it will
either overwinter or self-sow. Seeds are easy to collect and
germinate, for insurance.
