Let me add in a few plants for fall color.
Many of the Solomon seals have bright yellow fall foliage. POLYGOTANUM
odoratum 'Variegatum' grows about 20" tall and turns a very showy yellow in
the fall. Another Polygonatum that I have grows 4-6 feet tall and has long
arching stems that right now are a nice straw yellow with dark blue berries
hanging from the stems. this is P. canaliculatum (commutatum) The plant I have
might be a polploidy species but I do not know.
I really like the yellow orange color with the bright white margins of Hosta
Minute Man. Another Hosta I like in the fall is H. 'Summer Fragrance' but for
a different reason-It stays nice and fresh all the way until a hard frost-in
late summer it puts on a nice set of new growth.
some of the grasses are great too. I like Miscanthus purpurascens FLAME GRASS.
It has red-ornge-gold foliage with silver flower plums. Another grass I like
in the fall is Chaschampsia caespsia NORTHERN SEA OATS, the foliage color is
not much yet -- but the seeds heads a fun.
Some of my Peony cultivars have a nice rusty red color.
Well, the leaves have fallen off the tress so the year is almost over here in
Minnesota. Only have a few things still blooming The Aconitums still look
great with large blue/purple helmet shaped flowers, Aster 'Purple Dome' is
just about done.
The Cimicifuga simplex 'White Pearl" just started to bloom about two days ago.
Now it is the last plant that I have that blooms -- got rid of the Korean
chrysanthemums that bloomed around thanks giving.
Oh another group of plants I like in the fall is the Pulmonaria's they have
grown new leaves and they look really bright and showy. I have some nice
seedlings that I like very much from my 'Paul Aden.'
If any one is looking to do some breeding in this group of plants I recommend
this as a parent plant.
This year has been a mixed year with the hail storm this spring and all. I am
glad for the rest of winter--but eagerly waiting for spring!!!
