Re: peonies & voles

I have never had problems with voles eating Peonies, I have gone through about
200 cultivars so far and the only vermin problem I have had is the squirrels.
They some times like to dig them out of the pots after I pot them up. (evil
squalls- but that's a different problem)

In the winter the voles love to eat my ASTILBE, One year after uncovering my
plants in the spring i found 30 pots gutted. the voles had eaten the whole
ASTILBE and left nothing but a pile of dirt. the ASTILBE were planted right
next to the Peonies, in fact inter mixed that year and the voles never touched
them, they did make their tunnels over the top of the pots but they did not
consume the Peonies.
Every year a few different plants are consumed by the voles, but that depends
on the vole population I bait well each fall and that appears to be working.
On year I had so many mice and voles- the back yard was the local hang out
for four or five hawks. There was one in the trees all day. It was a good
distraction while planting, the hawks also like to eat the garter snakes too.

I agree, if you have to have spring bulbs go with the Dafs. the voles will
not like them as much. If you have to have Tulips then plant them deep-over
six inches and plant early and step the soil down good. Might even want to
add a good layer of small rocks on top mixed into the first inch or two of
soil.
