Sunflower seeds like many annual seeds release a chemical, whose name I
cannot remember at this time, which inhibit other seeds from germinating.
In normal amounts this is not a problem but under birdfeeders it can be
althought the area affected is usually small. This has never been an
issue in our gardens and we have numerous feeders.
