Re: grit and gravel

Judy,

As Kitt said, it's available at feed and grain stores (getting harder to
find in urban areas) and sometimes garden centers in semi-rural areas.
Preferable is granite grit; some poultry grit sold is limestone grit and
some is crushed oyster shells...as Kitt said, be sure to check as some grit
has added stuff good for poultry, but not plants.

I prefer starter size, although ended up with the next largest last time as
it was all that was available - think it's called grower.

Tom Clothier has a good description of grit, along with other potting and
seeding mix additives on

http://www.anet-chi.com/~manytimes/page41.htm

I also ran across a post from him in my files about using powdered oyster
shell grit on seed pots to no ill effect, but I am not certain whether this
would be the same if used as a soil amendment in garden beds because, as he
says, seedlings stay in the seed pots such a short time.

I have found one source for buying grit mailorder - it's pretty expensive
that way. I pay around $7.00 for a 50lb. bag...but for the desperate:

If that doesn't work (it's a search query and sometimes they have a finite
life), the site is Murray McMurray Hatchery (wanna buy a bird?)
http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/ -Go to Misc. Equipment in the left
index column and scroll down the ensuing page until you find granite grit.
