You're right, Nita...left in the ground until the foliage is blackened and
killed by frost. Dahlia foliage turns into a mucky mess when this
happens, so you can tell it's time to dig the tubers. Be sure to leave
some stem attached as dahlia tubers with no bits of stem will never grow.
I used to leave about a foot of stem (for the tall kinds), trimming that
back later when I packed them away...it will dry and rather disintegrate,
but you have to keep some attached. If any tubers fall off the clump with
no stem, just compost them, no matter how nice and plump they are - they
will not grow.
