Yes, you can cut it back now-is it in some shade?  They do best in all day 
sun in lien soils. Do not fertilize this plant.

They thrive in poor soils in full sun under dry conditions.

Great yellow flower bracts in the spring on plants that grow the size and 
shape of basketballs or a little larger, reddish foliage in the fall adds 
interest.
