Bob,
Are you sure you have started with the true cultivar "Goldsturm'? I have
several large patches of this plant and have never seen a seedling. The
vegetatively propagated 'Goldsturm' does not produce fertile seed according
to the catalogs. All of the other rudbeckias seed themselves here but not
'Goldsturm'. I know there is a difference of opinion on what is the true
plant however the 'Goldsturm' supplied by reputable nurseries will be
absolutely identical, plant for plant. They can be mutiplied by division
rather quickly but are always the same plant. Goldsturm requires more water
than most rudbeckias to do it's best. Ruth Clausen on perennials says that
what is offered as Goldsturm "strain" does not have the quality and
uniformity of the the true selection. I have tried it both ways and the
properly labelled plant is a superior garden plant.
