Marjorie,
I grow my Persicaria (syn. Tovara) 'Painter's Palette' in 2 different
locations. One group is in part shade and one in full shade without fading
of the red chevron and white variegation. Why don't you try moving one or
two into the shade and see what happens to the color? It is very drought
tolerant and great to use under trees. This plant can stand a lot of abuse.
When the ones in full shade finally begin to wilt, I know I had better get
some water to that area, but a good soaking brings them right back.

I'm wondering if the Persicaria I have is the same as what is being
discussed. Mine is too tall to be considered a "ground cover". The
leaves had fairly good variegation when I bought it, but after 2 months in
full sun, it seems faded. Should it be planted in shade?
Mine is probably about 20" tall.
