Not sure how you'd anchor the rebar, except perhaps using a bulb auger
drill bit to drill holes into the ground. Oh, wait, you could get a
straight piece of heavy pipe or thick (1"+) bamboo and drive it into the
ground with a hammer (pipe) or rubber mallet (bamboo), then pull it out
and pop the ends of the rebar into the holes. The pulling out part isn't
always so easy, but I do it every fall when I gather up my bamboo support
poles and I'm no Olympic strongman or anything.
As for anchoring a copper arbor, Rebecca Coles made one on her show,
"Rebecca's Garden," during the last season (perhaps the instructions are
still on the Web site?). She drove four 30" pieces of straight rebar
(such pieces can be bought in several different lengths at Home Depot,
Lowe's, etc.) halfway into the ground, then fit the ends of the copper
tubing over the exposed rebar.
I've never seen a rebar arbor. Since rebar rusts, wouldn't that look
rather (interesting?) after a few weeks? Copper tubing is amazingly
inexpensive -- at least in these parts it is -- and after a few weeks of
exposure, of course, you get that greenish "patina" that everyone's
always raving about. Doesn't Rustoleum make a clear spray-on product?
