RE: hummingbirds

Hi Nancy,
I planted a lot of different flowers in my deck pots with hummers in mind.
An experiment really, to see what draws them. And the verdict is in - #1
has been Crocosmia masonorum, #2 the hot pink coral bells of Heuchera 'Snow
Angel', #3 Salvia 'Honeymelon'. Lots of others come in #4 - Nicotiana,
Million Bells, Fuchsias, tuberous Begonias, hot pink Verbena, Penstemon
'Ruby', Abutilons 'Pink Satin' and 'Nabob', Salvias patens, 'Black & Blue,
Van Houttii and the little hops-like Oreganum 'Kent Beauty'. I can almost
set my clock by them (one male & one female) as they make their rounds twice
a day.
They are really fun to watch aren't they? They don't pay any attention to
me if I am on the deck, but they do dive bomb my visitors! I've heard them
called the Guerillas of the bird world :). Marilyn

I've been fairly successful at attracting butterflies to my garden, but
haven't had much luck with hummingbirds. There are a pair I believe are
nesting in our yard, and they often come to the feeders (when bees and wasps
don't chase them off), but I very rarely see them have any interest in the
flowers. Do any of you know what plants might attract them? (I thought all
the salvia I planted this year might do it, but no luck.) They are such fun
to watch, I'd like to encourage them.

Thanks,
Nancy Lowe, Arkansas, zone 7 (where it's been 80's and rainy all day, what a
nice change!)
