Re: hummingbirds

Thanks for the hummingbird suggestions. I have found that ours don't seem
to be terribly interested in the "traditional" flowers. Or, maybe I just
have the wrong varieties! This year I had petunias, agastache, phlox,
ixora, cannas...no heuchera (at least not that bloomed), monarda, or
tiarella, however. May try some of those for next year.

I find it interesting that Allen says they won't feed on nectar more than 2
days old. I only clean out my feeders once a week, at most. And our little
visitors seem to be much more attracted to the feeders than to the flowers.

I really want to plant flowers that they like; I only have 2 feeders, and
they don't seem inclined to share much, so I thought the right flowers might
provide enough for everyone.

They are absolutely hysterical to watch, aren't they? I was perched on a
rock wall, leaning over to deadhead some flowers the other day, and one
zoomed right past my nose. I'm sure I looked pretty funny trying to keep my
balance, but it certainly startled me! Every evening when I sit out on the
deck and watch them swooping around and playing tag, I have to giggle at
them.

Anyway, the suggestions were quite helpful, especially the specific
varieties. I'll try some of them.
