Well, Diann, what I have the largest patches of are:
Pachysandra terminalis
Vinca major and minor in assorted variegated forms
Phlox divaricata
Lamium galeobdolen (was Lamiastrum) - have to watch this one, it has
visions of world conquest.
Pulmonaria 'Mrs. Moon' - really covers large patches of assorted
ground -seeds around. I leave it unless it gets in my way.
Brunnera macrophylla - also seeds around.
Geranium macrorrhizum - very nice and semi-evergreen for me.
Symphytum grandifloria
Mazus reptans
Begonia grandis
Asarum canadensis
Hedera helix (ivy) assorted varieties; there's more up the trees and
side of the house now than on the ground, I think.
Ajuga in variety. I try to keep the purple leafed ones and pull out
the green ones when they get too exuberant.
Fragaria 'Pink Panda'
Hay-scented fern - another really rampant child.
Nicotiana sylvestris- have an extremely large patch of otherwise
unplanted woodland garden where it has seeded too thickly. I just
left it as a groundcover. Some is tall and blooms and the rest is
just huge leaves about a foot or so tall.
Tiarella - assorted - the creeping types
Plain old orange daylily (H. fulva)...have large patches in the shade
that never bloom; just cover ground...will one day get dug out and
replaced with something I really want.
Large stands of just about any perennial, including ornamental
grasses, act as groundcovers, really, even those that go dormant in
winter. In varying amounts, I consider Aquilegia, Digitalis,
Lunaria annua and some of my Euphorbias as almost groundcover, but
the ground they cover varies each year...some die; others grow on
from seed.
In my oldest borders, there is very little ground exposed for most
of the season....we will not count the ground ivy and Duchesnea
indica who keep trying to cover ground:-) Them, I do NOT like!
