You didn't say where you live--here in Central NC I know of two local
growers who don't do mail order; sell out of the fields in June. It's a
fabulous way to see how the plants really perform. I don't buy catalog
daylilies as a result; can't compare prices. I can say I have a HUGE clump
of August Flame that put up 10-15 stalks the first year in my garden; paid
US$15. It never sells because it doesn't bloom in June, so the clumps just
sit there and get bigger every year... You might have someone similar
nearby?
If you should be in the market for random, or "plant now, sort later," look
into Terra Ceia (no web site yet). Terra Ceia Farms, 3810 Terra Ceia Road,
Pantego, NC 27860. 800/858-2852 They sell mixed daylilies by the bushel.
Can't recall their price; do know that a bushel of mixed (and fabulous)
daffodils-for-the-south is $65. 400 bulbs to the bushel.
