OT - bird identification

Today my husband and I saw a bird we have never seen before. We went through
our bird books but could not find it. It was approximately the size of a
starling or robin with a black breast and some black mark on its head and a
clear yellow back. It was not an American goldfinch, which is common around
here. Does anyone have an idea?
