* Scientists confirmed last week that redwoods and Douglas fir trees are
susceptible to sudden oak death. They now fear the phytophthora disease
will
threaten Californias tourism and timber industries. The disease has
been
found to infest only redwood and fir saplings, and its unknown if the
disease can injure mature trees. More than 10,000 coastal live oaks from
Monterey, Calif., to the southern tip of Oregon have been killed by SOD.
Scientists have now confirmed 19 host species of the SOD pathogen.
