Len,
Maybe you would write a paragraph or two on Hosta size. Officially they sell
as very large, large, medium, etc. on to tiny plants in the rock garden.
Some of those rated large and very large, once fully established, are tough
customers. We have some encircling a rain barrel and Ed says the barrel is
rising with those plants. You can select from the many available some plants
that do not reach this tremendous size and strength. That way a clump can be
kept more manageable by a gardener who does not posess a backhoe.
For some reason the largest plants available were the most popular for a
while but that may have changed and people will now look at some that can
live in the garden with other plants without taking over.
A not always infallible rule of thumb is that a variegated plant will not
grow as vigorous as an all green plant so may be in the long run easier to
handle. Another problem is that tags in nurseries do not always carry this
size information. A Hosta specialty catalog usually does give size and it
seems ultimate size and strength are being discussed here.
