I do not have the rock, hard soil that you all have decribed but I have a
truly "ucky" base that is full of clay and stuff. All of my gardening beds
are raised and it seems to work very well for me. The base of the beds are
about 6" of bank sand, topped with about 8" of compost and then another 5" of
cypress mulch. The combo seems to be affected and something in what I am
doing keeps my watering to a limited during our summer droughts (generally
once every 5 days, but I water for a long time).
