Seedlings everywhere

I had this to happen a couple of years ago. After several months of
drought, the poor plants were thinking about dying. The following fall
I had more dogwood seedlings than I could pull up. All had mildew or I
would not have pulled them up. The Japanese maples on the other hand
were so plentiful I felt a calling to rescue each and every one from
under all the wonderful trees at all the rich banks in the area. The
banks have them mulched 6 inches and the seedlings would have died
anyway. Now I have such a richness in all the wonderful types of
Japanese maples.
With all the rain we have had here in Tennessee(east) I have more weeds
than anyone can stand. That drumstick verbena is spreading too fast
inspite of my cutting most heads off and disposing of the seeds. The
Rudbeckia simulatans is covering every bed. Help. It is lovely now but
I will have to work to not let it go to seed. One only needs some many
8 feet plants that come up everywhere. It is no wonder I can't have any
design in my "natural" garden.
