Title: Was: soil vs soil-less, now Shade
My whole neighborhood is silver maples, so I know your pain. Unfortunately, though they’re known to drop limbs right and left, I’ve not heard of them coming down altogether. Along the same lines, another neighbor of mine put in a white pine near our lotline (small 60x120 ft lots) It looms over my house but at least it’s to my north. What can you do? Do you have any other spot you can grow veggies? Kitty From: owner-perennials@hort.net [mailto:owner-perennials@hort.net] On Behalf Of Don Martinson I have just the opposite problem, Kitty. The small patch on which I used to grow a few vegetables is now shaded by my neighbor’s now large silver maple tree. I hate to admit it, but every time a windstorm comes through, I find myself muttering “Oh please, oh please”. I only have 3 kinds of Hellebores but all seem to grow fine. Most of my ferns seem to do ok too. However…. The electric company just came through our easement and cut down 5 of my neighbor’s 50yr old trees to my west and suddenly my shade garden is in full sun in the late afternoon. |
