I have been composting for many years, and am still not sure I have it
right, because very often the pile does not seem hot, but every few months
(except for the winter here in NYS zone 5) I get some very dark, not smelly,
crumbly black gold;
I don't put in meat, or bones, or fat, but all bread, egg shells, coffee
grounds, noodles and fortune cookies from the chinese take-out, besides
fruit and vegetables, spaghetti, rice;
you're supposed to layer the above kitchen scraps alternately with green
garden waste, like grass clippings, and another layer of brown garden waste,
like dead leaves, plants;
I understand you can put shredded paper in also, and I used to put the used
cat litter in.
