One very effective way of keeping track of what and when is to use
styrofoam drinking cups as planters. Use a ballpoint pen to mark the
plant name and date it was planted. Although the ink fades, the cup
remains embossed forever. A clever electronic trick involves using a
computer and database program. I obtain 98% of my plants via the mail and
use a word processor to compose the order lists. I then separate genus,
species , nursery and date with commas and save the file as text. Rigidly
organized into a series of columns, this "delimited ascii" can be imported
into any database program if a database structure has been pre-defined.
Of course this takes some understanding of the particular software one
uses, but properly used, it is a powerful record keeping system; the best
part is that adhesive labels can be output and stuck on the pots.
