A lot of it has to do with how often you wish to repot, and the plant's
particular growth habits. Clivia and bougainvillea are happiest pot
bound, but this means watering more often, of course. Some plants need
extra room, others will slow growth dramatically if up-potted too much.
Plants that need dampness or cool roots I think would do better in bit
of an oversized pot to allow excess water holding capacity and more soil
for insulation.
