This brings up a question that I've been meaning to ask about the
goldenrods. But first an introduction...
For a couple of years I was growing 'Golden Baby' at my Mom's house
(we kind of share the garden there :), and it was really nice the
first couple of years. Never got larger than 2 feet, had the typical
goldenrod blooms (although more of a pure gold), and didn't seem to
sucker much.
Shortly thereafter we started noticing goldenrod seedlings coming up
everywhere else in the yard (hundreds of feet away). We left them
naively thinking that although these were more like the straight species,
there was a possibility that they could be contained.
Anyhow, it's now several years later. 'Golden Baby' disappeared,
and we just finished yanking all of the large established clumps of
goldenrod in the various beds.
So... Are there any dware goldenrod cultivars that are sterile? I
really like the way that they brighten up a flowerbed in late summer
and fall, but the maintenance issues far outweigh asthetic qualities
right now. Who has suggestions?
Chris
