Hello Patty.
I think I have bad news -- it sounds like rust. Rust is a fungal diase, I
would dispose of the plants. It sounds like they have already released
spores for next year. I do not know how long the spores are viable in the
soil.. But treatment would have to begin in the late spring/early summer.
I hope you are enjoying the warm weather we are having in Minnesota, though we
could use some rain. My poor ASTILBE suffered this week while I was working
around the house. Guess I should not let family take care of the watering for
me.
The late summer and fall it's very important to keep up with the watering,
plants are growing new roots and buds for next year. Plus the air is dry and
the ground dries out faster.
