Except for digging up the tender bulbs like gladiolus and dahlias, and
mulching a few of my tender roses, I don't do any winterizing at all. I
leave the stalks of both annuals and perennials where they are to trap
winter snow and any leaves that may settle in the garden. My big cleanup
time is spring, when I remove all the dead foliage and similar materials
early in the spring before the new plants start to sprout.
