Some of my plants are beginning to look a bit tacky by this time of year
too.  Are you sure to keep your plant's roots "cool"?  No, no sunglasses,
but something to keep the roots in shade and from drying out to soon.
Clematis are also reputed to prefer soil a bit on the alkaline side, but I
don't know how crucial this is.
