Around here, the freeze-thaw cycle can play havoc with newly-divided plants
in the fall. I always do this in the spring while they are just beginning
to show. I feel like the conditions in spring are more conducive to new
plants than the harshness of fall. We have freezing rain a lot and wildly
fluctuating temps until winter actually sets in. Too problematic for
plants to settle back into the ground. If I must divide, I do the
spring-flowering plants now.
This year, for sure, I wouldn't plant a thing this fall. Our drought has
made a mockery of gardening in this area.
