Re: Great Plant Arisaema $$$

Nan,

IMO Great Plant Co. is highly overpriced in general. In looking at what
they list, I thought most everything could be found elsewhere at more
reasonable prices. What Gene says about Arisaema is true, however, Ellen
Hornig has a very nice list of tubers for between $6 and $12 each - (small
non-blooming to blooming size). I have purchased tubers from her and they
are doing just fine.

She's on the web.... http://www.senecahill.com/arisaemaf99.html

Her nursery, Seneca Hill Perennials, is small, with an extremely nice list
of plants...including Cyclamen to die for...it was one I wrote about in
last springs series on mailorder nurseries - URL to article, if you want to
know more about her nursery, plus see photos of A. candidissimum, Cyclamen
and the super Symphytum x uplandicum 'Axminster Gold' (which I got one of
and it is incredible), is:

If you are truly interested in this marvelous genus, do consider joining
the Arisaema Enthusiasts Group. AEG hosts Arisaema List - email list like
this one - where you can learn from real experts - bunch of very nice
people, traffic varies; sometimes light, sometimes a number of posts.
Plus, there is a seed distribution each year - not an exchange; you get
seed whether you have any to give or not. There is no actual charge, but a
contribution is appreciated to help offset postage, etc. costs. I have
about 20 pots of seedlings going from seed I've received in the two years
I've been a member of the group. One of these days, I hope some of them
will mature and produce seed that I can donate. The whole point is to
encourage people to grow Arisaema. It's pretty easy to germinate Arisaema
seed, you just need to be prepared to care for the baby tubers for a couple
three years until they are large enough to fend for themselves in the
garden....not a hard thing to do, really, they are not demanding plants.

For those who don't know this genus, (it's the one our native
jack-in-the-pulpit belongs to), visit The Arisaema Page for photos to make
you drool plus considerable data and the most comprehensive list of
hardiness ratings for them around. URL is

To join AEG (which costs only a list of whatever Arisaema you happen to
grow, if you grow any), email Ray Stillwell and he'll set you up. You
automatically get on Arisaema-L by joining. Here's his email address.
