I had a hydrangea in a pot fo about three years while I tried to decide what
I wanted to do with it. I actually kept in in a cool greenhouse, but in a
cold and dark enough spot to let it go dormant. My suggestion would be:
leave it outside until the first frost, and then move it somewhere that it
will stay cool, but the roots won't freeze (maybe a garage or a shed? Water
it just enough to keep the roots from drying out, then move it outside once
you're past hard freezes in the spring.
Good luck!
