Hi Lynn, I am in your zone area and have no problem with V. 'Goodness Grows'
returning in the spring. (I've planted it both in the spring and fall with no
problem.) Salvia 'Indigo Spires' not only returns, but returns in
multitudinous numbers as do the Salvias guaranitica 'Black and Blue,' and S.
guaranitica 'Blue Enigma.' Salvia guaranitica 'Argentina Skies' is not as
vigorous for me in it's growth or return, which is nice when you find
yourself inundated with mammoth Salvias by September and billions of babies
come spring. I might be wrong, but I think all of the these blue ones are
rhizomatous or tuberous. I know 'Blk and Blue' is -- each spring I feel I'm
battling strange, mega-sized alien-tubers from taking over entire gardens.
Weird looking and wildly rampant things.
I think the most important thing about using copper
as a slug deterrent is that it has to be exposed enough out of the ground so
that the slugs have to actually have to climb over it to reach the plant --
like an edging material. Let us know how it works for you. I canceled that
project in my gardens when faced with the sheer logistics of it.
Good Luck!
Holly
